£400 energy refund and energy bill price cap using two different suppliers

Running ahead here a little - but it's excercising my tired mind. Like many folk, I used two different energy suppliers. One for Electricty. One for Gas. As I understand it the £400 refund is be reverted to my "energy account" in the form of 6 monthly payments of £66:00. How will they work out which account to credit it to, Gas or Electric - or will one firm play off the other and I dont get it at all. I can't see them working out a pro rata for each account.
Even more down the "cor blimey" route. If the energy cap is set at £2,500 (say) how can they apportion that to each energy bill in the percentage reflecting my Gas and Electric usage? I can see folk like me with separate accouts getting hit with two £2,500 caps - one for each company whilst (if) they sort out. I can't see Eon and British Gas having a little chat to sort my bills out in a fair proportion.
What do you think? Is it a mess waiting to happen or is it that I just don't understand the process? Cheers for giving this some thought.

It will be applied to the Electric account.1

Hi - a perfectly reasoable question, but one that has been thought about so there's not a problem. The £400 will always be linked to the electricity account on the basis that everyone has electricity but not everyone has gas.

A cap is just one figure for a use of 12000KWh gas and 2900KWh electricity.
From that figure the maximum unit rates and standing charges are calculated for you region by the suppliers.
You did not mention it, but from your question it seems you believe that the £2500 is the maximum (cap) what you can be charged. This is not the case, it is the maximum what you can be charged for exactly the above split of electricity and gas.
The mor energy you use, the more you are going to pay, at the maximum unit rates defined by the cap.

I think it will mean some bank transfers for me -Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Thanks for your replies. Good to hear that the £400:00 will be applied to the Electricty. That makes it simple. Also, as I understand it the "price cap" may be based on unit prices and will therefore not be a bill cap but a unit cap? that will mean it will be irrelevant as to who supplies the energy and it is still possible for the user to save money by turning down the heating etc?
(Interesting to know if I'm in a minority not having a duel fuel contract.)0 -

Did you think it would just be 2500 for as much as you want to use, like some sort of all-you-can-eat buffet?0 -

Yes of course I did. But now I will refrain from opening all the windows and setting my stat at 30 degrees. It was my "heat up to help out" deal to form part of my "all-you-can-heat" policy. The same way as the price cap works at the moment.
"The same as the price cap currently works" Got it. Thanks.1
