I work for the NHS and unfortunately my petrol car is on its way out.

I'm looking at options....
I've ruled out the salary sacrifice leasing scheme due to the effect on my pension.

I am interested in a new electric vehicle, particularly the e-niro. When to the dealership today and quote for an e-niro was £35.5k with £695 delivery+£600 for the paint colour on a basic model 2. The hyundai kona premium is £35.1k with similar fees. The kona had more bells and whistles on it but the e-niro was a nicer drive and had more space.

Used car prices are sky high at the moment but I'm not in a position to hang on for several years until the car prices come down. I looked at 2-3yr old cars and they're very similarly priced to new vehicles.

I'm also considering a Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid which would be £27k I think (going to see that tomorrow).

I asked about NHS discounts and affinity etc but they didn't have anything like that. They offered me 6.9% on a PCP deal which I think is pretty expensive. One of the reasons that I'm interested in an EV is I'm considering getting solar panels so it would make the EV more economical. I appreciate there's likely an energy cap price freeze at present but the return on investment is still pretty attractive.

I've also got a keen MSE head on me and wondering the best options.

1. What's the best online car broker that I can use to compare prices?

2. Are there any other deals I'm not aware of....I looked at NHS Fleet solutions and bluelight car diacount but neither of the kona or eniro are on it...

3. I could get a cheap personal loan 2.8% and put my money instead in some savings / investments rather than PCP? I suspect the days of 0% car finance are longer gone

4. I could consider buying the car outright but would miss out on the investment gains

5. Not sure what the advantage of PCP to me is to be honest - there doesn't seem to be any dealer incentive being given to me over and above the standard offer

Welcome any other ideas and thoughts

How about the new MG 4 EV which is £25k new and they do the affinity discount scheme for the NHS, although the MG 4 EV is not yet showing as it is brand new release, but all the others are on there, so maybe worth checking.

The MG ZS EV with the affinity discount would be about around the £27-28k range as well I believe.
  • While not electric, you could get a 1L Dacia Sandero for £12k on the road. Might buy you some time to save for a EV..

I went for a second hand Renault Zoe (battery owned). Second gen version with a 41kWh battery. Averages 150miles year round.

I paid £14.5k over 3yrs ago, and it's a very capable and cheap EV to run. I can see private sales of similar ones for about £16k so obviously more expensive today, but still substantially cheaper than new.

I would suggest something like that, a 40kWh Leaf or the Hyundai Ioniq. The first generation 28kWh Ioniq has a shorter range on a full charge, but very efficient and a decent charging rate so is a good prospect.

I'd be dubious about a used Leaf. They are known for high battery degradation. A used Zoe or Ioniq could be good.
Have you looked at the NHS Salary Sacrifice scheme?

+1 for the MG4. Best value new EV available and they've refined the user experience significantly from their initial offerings.
  • I just watched the excellent Auto Express review of the MG EV

This is the BEST affordable electric car | MG ZS EV review

MG has transformed the ZS into a real contender - allow us to explain in this review. Read more at Auto Express: New 2022 MG ZS EV review: https://aex.ae/3wYu70Y New 2022 MG ZS EV details and specs: https://aex.ae/3x0n87W SUBSCRIBE for more new car reviews and Steve Sutcliffe track tests: http://aex.ae/2gY9ABE It is no secret that SUVs and crossovers have seen massive sales growth in the UK in recent years. This means that, irrespective of whether electric, petrol or diesel is being used to power a vehicle down the road, there are no shortage of rivals for a small SUV like the MG ZS. Things are slightly less crowded for battery-powered SUVs, especially more affordable options such as the MG ZS EV, but even this sub-sector is filling up fast. Manufacturing costs remain high for electric vehicles, so few makers are able to offer prices anywhere near those of petrol or diesel equivalents. Despite this, MG has managed to deliver a pure electric SUV at a very attractive price which is ultimately its main weapon in attracting buyers - in fact, it's our 2022 Affordable Electric Car of the Year. The MG ZS has had a relatively short life so far, as an SUV that is. MG previously sold a ZS saloon and family hatchback based on the Rover 45 up until 2005, when the remaining assets of MG Rover moved into Chinese ownership. When the ZS was reborn in 2017 it returned as a petrol SUV that showed how the new MG brand was making strides in upping the quality of its cars. Even so, the ZS remained a budget option let down by relatively poor fuel economy. The MG ZS EV addressed this by swapping the petrol motor for an EV powertrain. As Nicola Hume finds out in this review, the switch to electric has given the ZS a new lease of life.
