Replacing Warm Air Central Heating.

I'm imagining in my mind that the house dates to 1978 (along with the current boiler) - that would fit for UK's brief dalliance with warm-air systems. Probably architect designed, with large windows, for that sea view, and an uncluttered layout. Putting radiators into such a house is going to detract from that original design, especially if you need to go for oversized ones for a cooler flow-temperature. It will also be a huge upheaval, as will an underfloor system, where you will probably need to dig out the slab base and install an insulated slab before laying the UFH system above it.
I think I would need to have very strong feelings about the warm air heating before I dispensed with it!1 -
Its just a fairly bog standard 70s house - nothing special. This would be my third house renovation (although by myself this time - no one to bounce ideas off) so I'm ok with lots of work being done. It does need an overhaul anyway since its mostly untouched since it was built (the current owners have owned it since it was built).0

macman said:Just out of idle curiosity, is it possible to convert a warm air system to wet CH, i.e by installing rads and connecting to the WA boiler, or is it totally different? Is gas warm air powered by heating hot water in the boiler and then transferring through a heat exchanger and fan system?
I have never actually encountered one of these systems in the UK.
Our Warm Air system (Johnstone and Starley Economaire 32) has:
1)Vents providing warm air to all rooms around the central column.
2)Three radiators supplied via microbore piping in the three rooms (third bedroom, bathroom and downstairs toilet) not around the central column
3)A water water circuit to indirectly heat the hot water tank (that also has an emersion heater if required).
All three are independently controlled.
How effective it is remains to be seen as we have only bought the house with it fitted this year and only have the hot water circuit on at this time.1 -
Blimey, that's reminded me that the only HA system I had experience of, a llllong time ago, also had normal rads in the upstairs bedrooms, so clearly it had 'wet' too!Jonboy_1984 said:macman said:Just out of idle curiosity, is it possible to convert a warm air system to wet CH, i.e by installing rads and connecting to the WA boiler, or is it totally different? I wonder what the 'advantage' of having HO was thought to be? I recall we found the air very dry - didn't like it much.0
