Hi all,
So currently in rental and set to move into our first house at the start of October. We have budgeted to keep as tenants in the rental property until the end of October as this gives us the once in a lifetime opportunity to move in slowly over a month. However,.with this in mind will we be paying for utilities in two properties?particularly concerned about energy bill at this time as you can imagine. Although we are likely to use hardly any as will not fully occupy the new property until the end of October.
We have crossed over in properties plenty of times as tenants. I remember water was straight forward as we simply told.them the date we would be occupying the new property. Although a while ago I can't remember anything devastating happening in cross over....but imagine, we may end up paying two.energy bills in October....yikes! Not sure on council tax too....any advice welcomed.
Many thanks

Energy accounts are per property not per person, so it's like to completely separate processes.
When you move into your new house, you need to contact the existing supplier for that house and set up a new account, giving them opening meter readings.
Once you've done that, feel free to do all the usual things considering switching/fixing etc.
When you move out of the rental finally, take an end meter reading and send it to your supplier for that house.

All you will be paying in the unoccupied property are the standing charges for a month or so. From 1/10 to 31/10, £23.20. Ditto water standing charges. Fairly insignificant compared to the other costs of a house purchase.
You will be liable for CT from date of completion, whether you've moved in or not.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
