It goes to the insurers who can decide what they think is a reasonable settlement.0

Depending on the content of the medical report provided by your solicitor, that is a very real possibility.

This is how my recent claim panned out:
Solicitor took details of claim and sent a claim to the insurance company.Solicitor engaged another (independent) medical firm to collate medical information from my GP. The medical company commissioned a general report from another private GP.
This resulted in further reports from various consultants as recommended by the private GP.
My solicitor acted upon the recommendations of these further reports, as well as sending them to the insurance company.
Insurance company made an offer.
Perhaps the best person to ask would be your own solicitor. My solicitor was more than happy to answer any of my questions and to explain the process to me.1 -
It depends on what the medical report says... assuming the solicitor is happy with it and it doesn't recommend any further reports either at a later time or by a different specialist then it will go to the third party insurer with a reminder (or first statement) of what general damages you are claiming (after they've discussed with you).
Then the negotiations start assuming its not a fixed tariff whiplash claim... how much negotiation there is will depend on how optimistic your solicitor has been, who the solicitor is and how many heads of claim there are under special damages... insurers fairly often blur matters a little by making global offers covering both general and special damages.1 -
