What kind of curtains to save energy?

My home uses roller blinds and I would like to change to curtains which would, I think, save energy loss through the windows. A friend advises me that curtains with eyelets, hanging from a pole, would be less effective than the older style with curtain hooks on a flat plastic rail because those would keep the curtains closer to the wall. However, thick, heavy curtains - which would be the best kind - are all with eyelets not hooks. Can anyone advise me?

There are various different types of curtain tops - eyelet ones have been popular for years but before that it was standard top - so a gathered section of fabric at the top, tape running through that, and then sections where little, strong, plastic hooks pull through - those little hooks get slipped onto a curtain ring and slide onto a pole - or, those flat, strong, plastic runners instead of the pole.
Unless you have a lot of draughty window units the pole method should be fine.
The curtains you choose will be the key point - in my home i have heavy chenille fabric with blackout linings - this provides heat retaining in the cold weather and heat prevention in the hot weather.
I often recommend a certain company, not because i own it or anything but because i've repeatedly had good quality products and good service.
