Ethernet Cable to Garden Office

  • I use TP Link powerlines and they are brilliant
  • If this is something that will make working easier and less hassle for years to come (people breaking up on calls is so annoying) and you don't want to tackle it yourself, i'd just bite the bullet and get it done.

The TP-Link mesh wiifi units just won't have the range through the walls of house and outbuilding to reach from one to the other.

Foam in wall insulation won't stop radio waves... aluminium foil-backed insulation and plasterboard does though!  It's why the point-to-point solution designs have the send and receive antennas (aerials) outside {they also need to be in 'line of sight' of one another}.  They don't need to be mounted high (just above head height to be out of the way).  But the house one needs a cabled connection - ideally ethernet cable.

Sadly the pics tell me nothing much I can't really read the near-illegible writing.  Nor can we see what the MCB/RCD arrangement is (or even if there is RCDs); let alone what the additional very low level consumer unit and what that serves/how it is connected to the first CU etc.,.
Your Devolo units get some 'iffy' reviews from a quick look, but people often don't post unless they have problems.  NB my Powerlines that might work or might not are TP-Link.  All brands use the same basic technology.

Where is the CU/meter relative to the modem/router and can you get an ethernet cable from it to near that CU to relocate the Powerline?

I'd certainly try it further away from a TV set if you can?

Better to go with SWA outdoor grade cable as per original quote.
A quick look at some of my suppliers - You can get duct grade Cat5e/Cat6 duct grade and SWA by the metre, so you don't have to buy a whole drum. Not particularly cheap though (SWA Cat6 runs at about £2.40/m plus VAT).

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

It's about 30 meters and the router is at the front of house so would need drilling at front of house and then cable going down the side and along perimeter fence (not burying the cable or digging up ground - just armoured cable and cover with gravel where possible.

Includes Wi-fi access point and 5 port network switch - labour quoted at £200 (half a day - dunno if that is 1 or 2 people - 2 came for the quote)

My first thought was now way but now struggling to find other companies locally - am searching media solution companies and computer network installation companies. Long shot but any recommendations in South Manchester/North Cheshire?

We used this and it is fine 3 years later and when it does go it will only cost me £14.99 to replace
Looks just like Openreach outdoor cable

  • Got a second quote (they quoted just from email and pictures - haven't visited):

CAT5e Full Copper Outdoor Grade £12.50
Unifi 6 Lite Wireless Access Point £125.00
    Unifi POE Injector £12.50
Installation & Termination of Cabling £250.00
    Subtotal 400.00 TOTAL
    VAT  20% 77.50
    TOTAL GBP £477.50

    Or a cheaper alternative

    CAT5e Full Copper Outdoor Grade 100M £12.50
Installation & Termination of Cabling £250.00
    Cat5e Module - White £12.50
    Subtotal £275.00
    VAT  20% 52.50
    TOTAL GBP £327.50

What do you think of the proposed cable? It's obviously cheaper.

    Any other thoughts?

As it is a office would it be better to get second line installed, if there is pole behind property it would just be drop wire into garden office.Your accountant could give advice on any tax advantages either way.

If you do go ahead with running cable from garden office to house you mentioned it would just be covered with gravel and attached to wall, in that case (which is not ideal) a steel wire armoured cable would be better for the protection it would give. If cable comes up through floorboards get whoever instals it to leave a few metres below floorboards as a re-make loop in case you want to move it in future or what's more likely technology moves on and you want to connect something else on to it.

If installers are trying to steer away from SWA it may be because it is more expensive and a bit more work to prep, which is why I suggested a electrician as they would not be fazed by that.

Why is he installing POE, WIFI AP and Switch will be more expensive for POE. Just get basic kit, should save you a few bob.
You do need external Cat 6 cable. Not sure about the cost for conduit.

If you already have electrics out there you don't need a Power-over-Ethernet switch surely? Just a regular 10 quid gigabit switch.
I'd source the switch and access point yourself and buy what is suitable for your needs. Their work should just stop at installing an ethernet socket for you to connect it all into.
