    Often its to protect a name for a future project but it can be for an idea that never got off the ground but having created the company just keep it. In addition to protecting the name some will intentionally register a future company to get the clock ticking on how old the company is... if he leaves the big company in 2030 and starts under his own company he can legitimately say "established in 2020". Knew a guy that spent a lot of money on buying a dormant over 100 year old company just to get the low company number and apparent age.
