What does this WhatsApp icon mean?

Does anyone have any idea what the icon on the contact profile picture means (circled in red)? This showed up for a couple of contacts on the notification window but then disappeared. I am using Android 12.

I'd assume that it means that person is on Whatsapp.

I get the same in my contacts book for Whatsapp, Viber and Telegram and as a notification this wouldn't surprise me.

Not sure what version of Android my phone uses but it doesn't show this to the best of my knowledge. Expecting a call later so I'll find out.

I've just sent a few messages to myself using Dual Messenger, when grouped it does not come up with that Whatsapp icon over the photo in the same way.

It does still, however, show clearly in my contacts.

Thanks. When you say it shows in your contact, is this in WhatsApp itself? The chat tab or the contacts list itself?

I'm referring to the contacts list on the phone. It shows a picture of OH for example when she's selected with Viber, Whatsapp and Telegram (I also use all 3) with the respective logo over this in a similar way.

If I click on my international phone number (the one I use Dual Messenger) in contacts, it shows only Whatsapp and Telegram as that's all the dual messenger is linked to.

I don't connect Facebook, Instagram etc to contacts, so I'm not sure if it would do the same for others. As someone who uses same phone for work and pleasure, I feel those involved in my business transactions deserve privacy (even though I use social media apps heavily for work for research), especially if I don't know them well enough to reasonably add them as a 'friend'. I'm not searchable by phone number either and don't connect any business e-mail to my social accounts.

Thanks. Oddly, since updating WhatsApp again, the icon has not appeared for any contact in the notification window.
