Savings for UK Citizen but not living in UK

I’ve been looking all over the Internet and cannot find much information or offers on savings and investments for people who are UK Citizens but are currently living abroad.

Does anyone have any info or know of any banks / companies that would allow my brother who is a UK Citizen to save in a UK Savings or Investment whilst he is living in Singapore? Thanks

It is not uncommon for institutions to allow people to keep accounts they opened while being UK resident if they move abroad. He will struggle to open any new account after leaving the UK as the vast majority are only available to UK residents regardless of their citizenship.
Investments are generally a bit simpler, because he could use a local investment firm and should still be able to access a similar range of investment options. Again, he could probably continue to trade within an investment account he opened while living in the UK.

If he still has a current account here, possibly NS&I.

Otherwise look at the Channel Islands or IoM e.g., Barclays International.

  • If you plan to be abroad for an extended period you should look at what’s available locally through pension plans and tax deferral. Also if you are in Singapore someone like HSBC should have a solution for you.
