Moving house and energy

We are hoping to move house end October/November. Our current house is on an excellent fixed rate tariff with British Gas until June 2023. The house we are moving to is currently with Octopus Energy and I have checked with BG we can't move with our tariff (was worth asking but no such luck) and they have also said thy wouldn't take us on as customers at the new address at the moment. That conversation was just before the October price cap was announced so perhaps that was a factor in that. What they said was no ones wants to take on new properties at the moment but Octopus will have to take us and they would expect we will have to stick with Octopus once we move.
Does that make sense?
Any advice on what we should do?

You MUST contact the supplier at your new house  ie Octopus when you move in and give them the meter reads. They have to take you  - you will be their customer
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Hi,
    from BG Moving Home:

Can I take my British Gas products with me when I move?

When you move home, you can usually take all your British Gas products with you. You can stay on the same gas and electricity tariff and keep your payments the same. If you’re taking HomeCare with you, we’ll start you on a new 12-month agreement based on your current cover and excess.

How do I make British Gas the supplier for my new home?

If you’re an existing customer and want to British Gas to continue supplying your new home, then no problem. If we currently supply the property you’ve moved into, we can set you up immediately. If there is another supplier for the property, then we will take over the supply as soon as you give us the go-ahead to switch. You’ll still need to pay bills to the current supplier until the switch is complete - usually in a couple of weeks. Rest assured that you’ll still have electricity and gas in your home during this period.

  • It also says usually - I've had a hard no from them

If British Gas won't move with you (so to speak) then yes, that is correct.
You will be supplied by Octopus and while I think EDF may be possibly taking on new customers, no one is really.
I moved in June and am stuck with the existing supplier of the property for the foreseeable.

As to what you should do, give Octopus meter readings when you move in and get your details on the account. And wait until other companies are taking on new customers if you wish to move.

just be careful when you move and contact octopus. they have to take you but they might try and put you on a fix that's more expensive than the standard rate.

you do not have to fix if you do not want to. you might want to fix and if so that's great but if you do not want to fix then they have to take you on the capped rate as they are already your supplier as soon as you move in.

(they also don't have to offer you a fix right away if they have existing customer products, you might have to be with them for some time before you qualify)

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

In the absence of a no-brainer fix (none of those around at the moment), always start on SVT, you can then switch the next day if you want to.
