Energy prices

I asked the following question to my energy supplier:
Can you please tell me that if my monthly direct debit payment will decrease if I don't use as much as predicted?
I received the following response:

This is your account and you are in control, we track Customers accounts to ensure their Direct Debit is set to the correct amount. We always inform Customers if we recommend them to increase/reduce their payments

If desired I can set you up on a variable direct debit where by each month you would submit meter readings, we would bill them and then create a payment for any debit accrued. This would allow to only pay for what you have used.

Does anyone think this is a good idea?

Are you able to budget and set money aside for larger winter bills?

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

I, and many others are doing this.

Just be aware that this means very high bills during winter, much higher than what you will be paying on a fixed direct debit, you will need to budget yourself and set this money aside to be able to pay for a high bill. On the other side of course there will be the months with low use where you are paying much less than the fixed direct debit.

If you are able to do the budgeting yourself instead of leaving it to the supplier it is a great system.
