additional debit cards

Hi,
I am reasonably money savvy, follow most of advise on site and heed contributors.
My family and I are travelling to USA early next year. We are looking for an account which will supply additional card for my daughter on my account. We will all be putting money into said account. Just for ease of flexibilty would like an additional card on the account. Cannot believe how hard it is. My family live 75 miles away, so both going to bank with ID etc not easy. Many current accounts do not have facility to do this. I have 2 Virgin M accounts. 1 First Direct acc. & RBS acc. Account needs to have no charges for accessing money or spending abroad. I thought I had found it in Chase, but do not supply additional cards.

you could put the Chase card on a curve card which effectively gives you the additional card

or indeed use Google Pay on your phone so your phone becomes the additional Chase card

or you could try and open a jpint Nationwide flexplus account which gives you travel insurance etc also fee-free currency and spending  conversion.

Starling bank.  Either a joint account or connected card.

You and daughter both open a single account, you can then open a joint account.

Or alternatively one account is opened and a 'connected card' added which allows the connected card holder to spend against someone elses account (£200 spend limit).

All applications processes are done online.

You should start by limiting your choice between the cards which are good for travelling - see the top travelling debit and credit cards write-up.

Getting a second credit card is very easy, getting a second debit card nigh on impossible but you can, in theory, circumvent it by using Curve, and may be ApplePay or Google Wallet, all only usable in contactless mode. Starling has the connected card, which is a physical card with a £200 limit.

Curve has an optional physical card too.

Yes, like with all cards, you can use the physical and the virtual. You can also use more than one virtual - say one on a phone, and one on a watch or tablet, but it can become very messy, and you risk getting the entire account blocked if multiple payments happen in a short timespace at different locations from different devices.

How old is your daughter as this will potentially limit options?

Why does it need to be an additional card, can't she just open a current account of her own and you transfer money to that online as needed?

I wouldn't try !!!!!! the system in the USA as they sometimes ask for ID against the card payment and this will obviously not match.
  • Banks normally provide a single card per current account holder.
If you want multiple cards then you simply add that person to the account formally.
Various workarounds may work but are a recipe for disaster if that pot holds all your funds.
  • Thanks for all replies, I will take it all on board & reconsider.

The USA is far from being all contactless also, so make sure you do have a physical card from the provider of your choice.
