Antique brass and ceramic dolly switches with no earth. Wooden pattresses.

My electrician told me that I could not fit these in my hall where plastic earthed ones exist.  Is this right?   I also have an old brass pendant ceiling fixture with the same problem, so that means that I can't use any of them?  It seems such a waste.

If they are in good condition I don't see why they can't be used. plastic switches generally aren't connected to the circuit earth anyway and most don't even have an earth terminal, so you are effectively swapping a plastic switch for a ceramic one. the fact that the ceramic switch has no earth connection is not relevant

They are not just ceramic though the brass is conductive and therefore needs to be earthed

A decent electrician may be able to modify both items to have a suitable earth terminal arrangement (and three-core flex on the pendant). Or not.  Depending on the item and it's construction and willingness to do such alterations.  If the lighting circuit has a ELCB/RCD on it then risk to life would be lessened even without an earth.

Alternative modern equivalents with earthing included may be a better way? e.g. https://www.broughtons.com/store/product/119753/round-dolly-light-switch-1-gang-antique-satin-brass-black-base/

You can get replica period light switches that incorporate modern switch mechanisms - Not cheap, but would satisfy all but the most pedantic of electricians.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Yes, the removable cover is often the reason that older switches fail to meet modern standards.
