EDF lack of bills. Moving suppliers SVR to another SVR?

I got moved over to EDF when my energy company went out of business. So stuck on the standard variable rate like most.
What is really really annoying is that I get only one bill every 6 months.
I want to change to a supplier that I can get monthly bills. So I know where I am with my bills.

I pay via direct debit.

For example I have been with octopus in the past as soon as I entered my meter reading they would calculate my bill.
Whilst EDF shows I have large amounts of credit as they haven’t calculated my bill since April.

Originally EDF tried to put up my DD from £55 to £171 in April. When I did my calculations I should of been paying £82 so have adjusted accordingly.

Has anyone managed to move supplier on Standard variable rate to another standard variable rate on another provider?  For better billing and customer services?

  • How long have you been with EDF? If you have received any bills from them, when did you get it?
As far as I know, EDF bill you every 6 months.  You can ask them to generate a bill, but you shouldn't have to in my opinion.  Like you, I like to know the current state of my affairs, not what they were up to 6 months ago.
If you note down your own readings, it's fairly easy to work out your costs.  It wouldn't take much more work to work out your balance, taking into account your paid direct debits.

I have gas and electric with EDF (following GNE and ZOG failures)

I have gas on DD Whole Amount Monthly  - which requires a monthly read but you do get a monthly bill.  Not for everyone as come the winter you will get very big bills.

Electric is on DD Fix   and that bills every 6 monthly. Irritating but not the end of the world -  I ask for a statement via Chat and also keep a spreadsheet to calculate costs.

In this day and age what does it cost EDF to generate a monthly statement.?

PS re your wish to change suppliers while on SVR - dream on -  other than EDF I believe Octopus are the only supplier who might, repeat might, take you on
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • We got no bills for ages when we joined so this isn't a new thing. They will issue as hoc bills if you talk to them on WhatsApp.

Bonkers that my meter sends readings every 30 minutes and they issue bills every six months. This needs to change in the current climate...

The 6 monthly billing is one reason why I left EDF for another supplier a year ago - when you could still easily switch. I kept a detailed spreadsheet of the actual usage and costs, and used that data to adjust the DD to target a zero balance at the end of the fixed contract, which I came very close to achieving.

Unless you are on a very good long fix, or you use almost nothing £55, and indeed £82 are unlikely to be adequate, the £171 is probably reflective of one twelfth of your estimated annual cost.

You can move to whole monthly bill Direct Debit with EDF and they will calculate monthly, but you have to pay the bill in full every month so will get seasonal variations. Octopus were taking on new customers but you had to phone them up, they have now stopped and will review again in October.

EDF have bought Kraken from Octopus and will change their system over to it.

I doubt that in the meantime they will make any changes to their system.

Elsewhere it's been suggested that EDF won't be changed over to Kraken until sometime in 2024. Having seen how badly other Companies have handled changing their billing systems, I'd hazard a guess that 2024 is optimistic !
Some customers have been lucky and got statements generated but I've been told twice now on Chat , that the schedule for billing/updating every 6 months is immutable. The last time the cheeky so and so told me not to worry - we will review your account in December !! Could be a LOT of debt by then ....good job I can use spreadsheets but others ??
  • Like victor2, I keep a detailed spreadsheet which is great at tracking historical usage and forecasting monthly direct debits.

If you are okay with Excel (or equivalent), it's a fairly straightforward task to set up the template for updating with your own  monthly readings.
