Economy 7 but wants to change.... Have no clue!

In 2021 I convinced my landlord who was due to change the heating in the flat not to put night storage heaters back in as I never used them. He put electric rads with the intention of changing my tarrif from economy 7. The electrician actually agreed and pulled the econ 7 cable out and said to call sse to get a new tariff. At the time I was just about to change the fuel crisis hit and the advise was to stick with your tarrif because of price cap blah blah... Anyway I don't know if that's still the advice?

  • An Economy 7 day rate will be higher than the single rate cap.  If you no longer have the night supply, you will get no benefit at all from an E7 tariff.

You'd have been much better served by learning to use the night storage heaters, but since you've got rid of them ... speak to your supplier and see if they can switch you to the single-rate version of your tariff.
Anyone else reading this: electric rads are one of the most expensive ways of heating a property. Storage heaters will be a lower-cost option for most people.

Unfortunately it's an old building and I work in the day so found that the storage heaters would be cold when I got on from work then had to but on a free standing heater as well! I'll get onto a single rate

    Thanks

I am surprised the landlord agreed to this.

Most people will run from a flat without storage heaters. And modern storage heater retain the heat longer, so that would have solved your problem.

  • Hi - if you're currently on a fixed rate tariff it's possible that you'll be better off staying on Economy 7 until it ends and then change to a single rate tariff at that point. By way of an example, on my last fixed rate tariff I was paying 6p for a night rate unit and 20p for an "expensive" day rate unit - but even 20p is cheap by current standard variable standards. Hope this makes sense? If you're on a standard vriable tariff, it should be as easy as just telling your supplier you want to switch to their single rate standard variable tariff and they'll probably just do it.

I'm unsure if I am on a fixed rate. I was paying 21p day rate before April..... I guess I'll call them. I'm also on pay as you go

They are no good if you get in at 7.30 8 pm then need to put on another heater for a couple of hours!

There are plenty of people coming on here who simply don't know the difference, and couldn't tell you if they have convectors or NSH's. LL's are not too bothered, as they're not bearing the running cost of single rate heating.
It always amazes me that you can rent or buy a property without seemingly knowing what the heating system is, but I think that will change now.

Probably they were just not set up properly: you just needed to reduce the output rate to retain heat for longer into the evening.

I live in an apartment and just done the sums. For me with E7 @ night 22p and day 36p compared with single rate 32p, I'm better off by £50 over 3 months to stay on E7 (including sc of 55p/day)  I don't have storage heaters, that's just from 1.5 hours of water heating per day and maybe making sure washing is done during the cheap rate. Just my input, for your knowledge.
