I think that once suppliers’ priorities move away from rollout, we will see more pro-active problem solving.
I agree. I would hope that once we get to a high enough smart meter coverage, suppliers will get new targets of eg. 95% of smart meters working in smart mode.

Closed loop problem, not resolving problems leads to smart meters getting a bad rep and will hinder take up.

An extremely high percentage of smart meters are working exactly as designed. A few posts on MSE are not indicative of major issues across the Country.

www.n3rgy.com provide an option for consumers to have their smart meter read by them remotely and then usage data made available for download, free of charge.

I informed E.On Next a few months ago that n3rgy had read my meter when they claimed they couldn't read it and was booked in for a replacement ... they apologised.

I had new smart meters fitted earlier this year.  My supplier receives the electricity reading but not gas.  The engineer came out in an attempt to rectify the problem but to no avail.
He says that gas meters transmit readings to the electricity meter and then then the readings go to the supplier.  Unfortunately, in my case the gas meter is just a little too distant from the electricity for this to work.

As near as makes no difference - it's actually to a communications hub that is on top (usually) of the electricity meter.
  • I have read all these complaints and mine have been similar. Scottish Power tell me that my meter is 'not communicating with them, and that this is a government department responsibilty, and they can't (and in my opinion don't want to) do anything about it. They say that this lack of communication is wide spread across the country. If this is true how is it that National Grid are offering £100 of your bills only to customers with smart meters?
I have a complaint to be sent to the Ombudsman which has produced some reaction from ScotP but no agreement.

Never said otherwise.  Of course as with many things, entities get judged on what happens when things go wrong rather than how often things work.

The responsible Government Department is BEIS. The smart meter network is managed by The Data Communications Company - a private company run by Capita.

The Northern region appears to be giving the DCC the biggest communications headache.

Re the savings - from the Octopus blog - ‘You’ll need a working electric smart meter so we can verify how much energy you’ve managed to save.’
  • Gas with SSE who fitted SMETS2 meter which worked fine daily until they advised our account would move to OVO and since then - no daily readings showing on our account and last bill they asked for a manual reading which we did. However they then sent an estimated bill so got back to them and told them to use the reading we had sent for bill please. New bill was done. Still don't know when oVO take over and no readings showing on our account.
electric with Octopus- all readings work fine so what is the prob SSE/OVO?
