The employer can dictate when an employee takes all their holidays, and can cancel if the necessary amount of notice is given.MalMonroe said:You should still be allowed to have your holidays, whether or not anybody else is off sick. That's not your problem and your employer should pay for temporary cover if necessary.
You cannot be held responsible for the health of any of your colleagues, it's up to management to sort out that problem. In fact, it sounds to me as if they should have employed someone on a temporary basis to cover your colleague's duties in the first place. What does your contract say about covering for long-term sick colleagues?
I'd be tempted to have a word with acas tomorrow, too.

Minimum staffing levels are a reason not to allow holidays.

Update I have spoken to my Assistant manager & manager of our section & campus manager politely expressing the need for that day off, due to moving & only Friday I can get help (mum) due to holidays & work etc,
all they said is due to staffing & workload can only approve annual leave if that colleague is back (Due back Monday) & not Loads of jobs to do but shouldn’t be a problem you having it off if all good in the office,
All I am gonna do now is wait till my holiday is authorised or denied by my assistant manager next week. If denied gonna accept it & try ask for the Monday off (no one is off that day)
so thanks for your replies1 -
How much stuff have you actually got to move?
Do you have a bed, sofa, white goods etc or is it things like TV, PC, books, clothes, kettle, pots and pans etc? The latter you can do on your own and over the weekend.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
That is not correct and setting a wrong expectation with the OP. Any business has the right to deny or cancel holiday due to operational needs provided they follow the rules.MalMonroe said:You should still be allowed to have your holidays, whether or not anybody else is off sick. They can of course put in contract terms which remove their right to do so, but that would be extremely rare and a bit daft of the company to do it.5 -
Our company policy states they can deny/refuse your holiday for operational needs/other staff on holiday/annual leave but states staff on long term sick are not counted for, so have to give a good reason when A/L is refused
so for example if there is 2 staff members of staff off on said day, 1 annual leave 1 (Sick) it’s counted as 1 member of staff off & one who is sick not counted for just managers worrying the work not being done/complaintsMovingForwards said:

that’s why I need 16th off
we are really short staffed tomz & Monday (if staff not back from sick) as got 2 staff off (Pre planned) & 1 (Long term sick after others booked A/L)
Leaving only 2 in door staff.
seems unfair they let them have their holiday whilst really shorty staffed was like that week of AUG 23rd when I was off sounded like they wanted me to cancel at the time but didn’t ask in the end
But when I ask they say no seems like a joke
but as I say we should be back to fully staffed from Tuesday & holiday approved0 -
Not for the first time, unfortunately.400ixl said:

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.4 -
lol still no update on day off will try sort it out next week as staff member is back from sick leave (Hopefully) will find out Monday.
so hopefully will be allowed it off..
Thanks for all the replies have a great weekend guys & girls0 -
Update
Friday looking less likely due to staffing issues and staff member still off sick,
so if Friday refused gonna politely ask for the Monday off, We fully staffed that day (Except for staff member off sick) but they said if too busy then no can do for day off,
If that refused gonna keep politely asking work for a Friday or Monday off ASAP after the 16th/moved into the flat, as need a day to sort things out etc,
They can't keep refusing my holiday requests just because they let us get bare short staffed0 -
Are you not moving to the time when you need to ask when you can take holiday? They need to allow you to take your holiday before the end of the holiday year (December? for many it is March). They can't prevent your taking it but, as you know, can tell you precisely when you can take it.GTR_King said:Update

my holiday years is April-AprilYeah I want/need a day off to sort out the flat etc which is reasonable request for a day off, as moving
but because of us being really busy & staff member off sick they reluctant to give me any holiday/annual leave till they are back which I feel Is unfair & could be a few weeks or longer
my holiday years is April-April
