GDPR right - tv programme police transcript

Hi just after a bit of advise please. So if this is a bit long winded

Basically awhile ago on the motor way I was hit by a car, it was quite a bad crash which fortunately no one was injured but one car was rite off and the other needed a lot of work.

The other person took full responsibility and everything went through the insurance

During the aftermath of the crash the police turned up with a camera man from a popular tv channel. It was all a bit of an odd situation.

I questioned what the camera person was there for and the police man said it’s for a tv show. I said I don’t want to be on tv (more so cause of the shock of everything) and they said they have a job to do

To the camera person I said I don’t want to be on camera which they said it’s not upto me and you need to speak to the office.

I emailed the contact I was given explaining I don’t give any consent of any image of me being shown or being involved in any potential programme.

I have heard from the tv company recently saying they want to use my call to the police but on the transcript using a different voice.

I replied back saying

I have now considered being referenced to using my call transcript and I do not give consent for its use or to have any involvement in your programme.

I’m curious as to how you have obtained a transcript of the conversation I had with the emergency services when I have never given anyone consent to listen or share the recording with a third party, as this was not a crime scene under GDPR I believe this information should not hav been shared without my prior consent

They have replied saying they won’t use my voice.

Where do I legally stand under GDPR, should they have consented me before being given the transcript ?

Well done if you made it this far

Sorry it’s a bit long winded

Thank if anyone could shed some light

  • Not sure, but what are you actually after?
The police often release voice recordings, like this from a woman I used to work with at the control room - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiQGv4YZbMA
As for the footage, if it's in a public place, then no redress.

I don't know what a crime scene has to do with GDPR, but technically it was crime scene.

The question is how would anyone know it's you or your call?

My first thought is that it's disgusting to expect you to be forced to be recorded. You could have walked away (if in public place) but then would the police have arrested you for doing this?
I'd log an official complaint with the 999 call centre who took your call, then with the police force concerned and also the TV company. They should never have filmed you or recorded your voice without your consent.
The call centre will most likely be the police force who attended. As for the tv company the OP was in a public place, so what do you suggest they complain about?

It's a public place, therefore you can be filmed. Same as the 'Auditors' who film Government establishments - works both ways. But of course you have the right not to have your image shown and so they will merely pixalate you.

As for the police call, i suppose it would be similar to when you call a business, your calls can be used for training purposes etc. This one may be worth challenging as i do not know the answer!

Literally not after anything. Just don’t want anything to do with it
I know it might sound petty but I was annoyed at the time, how it was handled and there was also an element of shock

So if they pixelate your face, obscure your voice, what is the actual issue?

So if your face is pixelated on tv, an actor reads the transcript which will not include your name or phone number, where's the data protection issue?

Thanks everyone I’ll leave it here. Feel like it’s been lost in translation a bit.

I know what you mean it won’t make a difference and I won’t be noticed just wanted to know if they can do that even though I have stated I don’t want it being used.
