Legal Aid question on behalf of my Mum

Hi,
First post here so go easy!
When my Mum and Dad divorced, my Mum used Legal Aid for advice back in 1989/90. As part of this, Legal Aid have a copy of her house deeds. I have recently contacted them with the authorisation form to find out how much my Mum now owes them. I expect the amount to be in the low thousands which I may be able to clear for her.
My question, is there any benefit in clearing the balance now and getting the house deeds back? Or wait until my Mum sadly passes and then do it then? As I said, as long as the amount isn't ridiculous, I should be able to pay it now but also happy to wait.
Many thanks
