Living abroad, should I get a prepayment meter?

I'm retired and live abroad 6 months of the year. Would it be worth changing my current DD payment for energy, to a prepayment meter? Has anyone done the sums on this?

Why would you want to do this?

Avoiding standing charges, this would be only possible with Utilita, but they don't accept new customers?

Avoiding fixed direct debit cost for the months you are not in? Go for a variable direct debit and credit meter.

Variable direct debit and a smart meter would be better than prepay, as the standing charges don't stop accruing just because your meter has run out of credit...

  • Thanks for the replies, I've investigated further and whilst the standing charges are annually ~£260, I've discussed with my energy provider and they recommend staying on the variable DD too.
