Annual consumption

As of todays meter read I now have 12 consecutive months reads. To work out my exact kWh for the year do I just look at this date last year and deduct from todays reading? Just checking it’s that simple! In my case electricity I’ve used 3519 units (same as saying kWh yes? ) and gas I’ve used 835 units in the last 12 months. So small changes I will make going forward are baths instead of electric showers and use the kettle on gas hob instead of electric one. Hoping little changes might lower the electric consumption a bit as we have a low gas usage don’t mind upping this a little bit. Any other swaps anyone can think of ?
Thanks in advance.

Electricity is easy as it is a straight kWh situation. For gas you need to convert the volume used, your meter will either register metric or imperial, then convert that volume into kWh using the calorific value (which varies, but not that much). If you post the meter reads and whether metric/imperial for gas, as well as your region, we can do it for you.

No, units are not kwh.  There is a formula to use,  it will be on a bill or provider’s website.
There is no way you have only used 835 kwh of Gas in a year, assuming you have a gas boiler?
The average is 12000 kwh, I’m considered a low user at 7000 kwh for a 3 bed semi with combi boiler 7 radiators and gas hob.

    835 x 11.2 for kwh assuming a metric meter.

The OP stated gas consumption was 835 units - If we assume cubic metres rather than (100s)cubic feet, that is going to work out very roughly as 9500KWh. As the calorific value of gas varies throughout the year, looking at the bill each month is the only reliable way to see how many KWh have been used.

I have my doubts that switching from a quick shower using electricity to having a bath heated by gas is going to save much. If anything, I suspect it will end up costing more, especially when you factor in water consumption.

And 835  x  31.7 assuming an imperial meter.
Not exact but close enough for annual consumption estimate purposes - my latest bill was 2 kWh difference between actual and rough calculation.
So 835 is 9532 kWh or 26470 kWh according to meter type which will be shown on the front of the dial - m3 or cu m for metric and cu ft or  ft 3 for imperial.
Alternatively look at your latest bill and divide the kWh charged by the units used which will be either around 11 or 32 then check the dial on the meter to make sure they are the same.

Gosh thank you! End of August 21 elec meter showed 15622 , gas 2691. Today elec 19141, gas 3496.
Our gas meter is I believe imperial. My bill has a calculation gas units used x 39.6 x 1.02264 divided by 3.6. I live in Bedfordshire.
Working it out I don’t think I’ve got a gas usage as low as I’ve led myself to believe !

It depends on whether it is a power shower or an electric shower.  The former just has a pump and uses hot from the tank.  This is relatively low energy use.  The latter heats the water and that is where the high energy use comes from.

If that's the calculation on the bill, you're metric.

So 9392kWh which isn't too bad.
