Can you get a mainstream credit card when on disability benefits?

I have a Vanquis, Barclaycard Forward, Capital One, Post Office, credit cards at the moment. I would like a mainstream travel card for when I go abroad.

Can you get mainstream credit cards when on disability benefits. I have no problem keeping with with repayments and always pay my credit cards in full every month. I have quite a-lot off disposable income.

  • When you apply for a travel card read the terms and conditions of what they class as income, if they allow disability benefits as income then you should state that as the income and see

I’m sure you can I think some even have the option of selecting disability benefit as income

You would just have to be honest about where your income comes from.

There are plenty of people who have what you call a mainstream credit card and are on benefits.

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

In general yes, it's no problem.  All they're interested in is what income you have, and whether it's a regular income - not where it comes from.  It's a similar question to those people whose income comes from a pension.
Of course the usual affordability checks will be made - income versus existing debt.  But in and of itself, the source of the income will not be an issue.

Its not giving me the option yet on the card online management page. I would like to upgrade. Had the card over a year now.

If you have a lot of disposable income then presumably you have reasonable savings? In which case why not get a debit card that's not got any overseas fees like Starling?

I already have two debit cards with no oversea fees. I would like a better credit card as this offers more protection.

What do you mean by "better"?  Any credit card will give you S75 protection, if that's what you mean.
But if you're wanting a card for spending abroad, why not just apply for one of those that are recommended here ? https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/travel-credit-cards/
If you have a reasonable credit history (which it sounds like you should have, judging from your opening post), then you shouldn't have too much trouble being accepted for one of them.  The "protection" they offer is no different to any other credit card, but they will save you money when spending abroad due to the absence of Foreign Exchange fees which many other "standard" cards will impose on each transaction.

Already 4 cards. So any income will be affected by the limits on these cards, when applying for another card.

"Better" is a subjective description... you have the same protection as you do with debit card the only difference is you have a second party that you can go after in the event of a misrepresentation or breach of contract. That may make things a little easier given geographies but if the light consumer protection law in the US means the merchant doesn't owe you anything then your credit card wouldnt owe you anything either.

Unfortunately S75 is often misrepresented to be much bigger than it is hence we get lots of queries of people wanting refund from their CC because they were ill and missed a flight etc
