Hi All!

Given the current crisis with energy, any ideas if i’m better to stay put with my current supplier (octopus) when I move home, or change suppliers to current at address (Shell) OR change completely?

The only difference with my new address, will be that it has Solar panels so i’m not sure best route to take..

advice appreciated!

(Wasnt sure if this was better on the energy or housing forum)

Thanks

As @p00hsticks - you must contact Shell first and become their supplier

Ask Octopus if this is possible .   I think it unlikely.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Probably more one for the energy board, but given there are few options at the moment other than paying the capped rates, I doubt it's going to make much difference (unless you happen to have a fixed rate deal and want to carry it over).

No I dont, octopus have given me the option to take them with me but thats just an avro plan. In terms of the solar, if im honest I’m not sure 100% how it works. Is it just stored energy that gets used around the house hence reducing the bill? I guess there would be no benefit right now sending energy back into the grid?
  • I am with Bulb and moving to an Octopus supplied property in 10 days. I contacted Bulb who said I had to cancel my account but could sign up again. I figured it was easier to sign up with Octopus as they have historic usage on the house, which I have done. I expect to get shafted either way.

No, there is no storage with solar panels unless it has a battery system, which is very expensive. In the day you can use the power generated in real time to reduce your own consumption, and the FIT's scheme assumes 50% is sent back to the grid. There will be a generation meter but probably not an export meter.
It has no connection with your energy supplier, so easiest just to leave the FITs with the vendor's existing FITs provider, as the rates paid are the same regardless. Make sure they pass you the details so you can register with the FITs provider. You then just need to give a quarterly reading from your gen meter.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yep a battery system worth having is above £2k, I've been looking into it myself.  I would ask for more details of how the solar energy system works practically as an urgent matter and get copies of the paperwork.
