music play back fuzzy

Hi to all and thanks for looking
Ok problem with play back on the computer i have speakers pluged into the computer and they are very fuzzy like the settings have been changed to "hall" or "concert" on playback. I have pluged in some headphones into the base unit and they also sound realy fuzzy - (have checked the headphones in my mp3 player and they are fine) I run both itunes7 and windows media player 11 when it is playing back it sounds like the singer is underwater?
any ideas?
