Notice period on periodic tenancy

Fixed term contract ended many years ago and i am on a monthly periodic tenancy. Rent paid in advance on 1st day of the month.
For me to end this contract would it be 1 months notice? And could i give notice on say 15th of the month to expire the 15th of the following month?
Or would i need to end the contract on the last day of the month?

one months notice whenever you like, but why not give a bit more after such a long tenancy? Has it gone ok? How was landlord?
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.

My landlord has generally left me alone. Although i have no gas safety, never completed electrical safety and suspect dangerous wiring due to broken sockets, no bonding at the gas meter and bare wires.
I will give as much notice as possible when i get a moving date. But didn't know if i had to end the tenancy at the end of the 'period' being the last day of the month?

No, it must align with a rental period.

If there is no GSC, then you can dictate whatever terms you wish, as the LL is committing a serious criminal offence with an unlimited fine and potential custodial sentence. The mere mention that you will be reporting it should bring about his compliance with whatever terms you require.
For the sake of the incoming tenant, you should report these dangerous breaches anyway.

    What about the EPC ?
You say no Gas Safe Certificate has been carried out ? This year or longer ?
Your Landlord should have also had an EICR done in the house electrics
Contact your local council housing department, CAB and Shelter.
You might get a big refund from your landlord

Please do report all these issues -

"no gas safety, never completed electrical safety and suspect dangerous wiring due to broken sockets, no bonding at the gas meter and bare wires."

This what the government says -
    https://www.gov.uk/private-renting/your-landlords-safety-responsibilities

    And also this - https://www.gov.uk/private-renting/complaints

Your landlord's negligence could end up being fatal and is totally out of order.

My landlord has no interest. He knows if i say anything he will just give notice for me to leave. So few houses and tenants have to suffer unsafe conditions.
That's why i think the proposed registration scheme for landlords will be a good thing. As currently tenants have to report unsafe conditions to the council and then suffer harassment and eviction notices

So BACKTOBACK what was the point of your post ?
Was this a made up question ?
Are you really living in a property with no Gas Safe Certificate? No EICR etc
If you want to leave you can serve notice and I am sure the landlord will be happy to give you a glowing reference and return your deposit if you paid one many years ago !
Maybe the Landlord is waiting for you to move out before selling the property
Do you work for Shelter or Generation Rent ?
If the LL is negligent then report him or her to all the right people.
Of course a licence scheme is a great idea which many councils are rushing to start and responsible LL,s are signing up too.
Costs will be passed onto tenants or more LL,s will sell up.
I love your general quote " so few houses and tenants have to suffer unsafe conditions " is so insulting to many hard working Landlords.
Rogue Landlords is a term used 8 times in the Rental Reform Bill.

He can give you notice via an S21, but, since there is no GSC, no EICR, and presumably other irregularities, he would not get a possession order until the tenancy is regularised. So you might not be evicted for a year, maybe longer.
Furthermore, if you do leave, he will have to refurbish the property to bring it up to a rentable standard again.
Your own apathy is half the problem here. He might show 'interest' if you say you will report him to HSE for the lack of a GSC. Does he know the potential penalty for this?

Hypothetical question but what would happen if he says okay he will complete the eicr and gas safety but will increase the rent £100 per month to cover it?
If i refuse the rent increase, and continue paying the agreed amount would he still need to use the section 21 process or would there be a quicker process for 'unpaid rent' due to the requested increase?
