    96 litres is quite small for a hot water tank, but that means it won't take much energy to heat it up.
    Using this calculator:
    ... It will take 5.59kWh to heat 96 litres (kg) of water from 10C to 60C.
    From what you have said of your usage, there's no way that you're using anything like the amount of gas that they are estimating.

    We heat our tank for 40 minutes a day, enough hot water for 2 showers. A bit of hob cooking, say every other day.

    Usage since the heating went off is less than 4kWh a day.
