Ecotricity

I'm trying to assess whether I should move from Ecotricity to Octopus. I am currently with Ecotricity who are not governed by the price cap. My annual usage is 12,000 kWh. Currently paying 36.49 per kWh and 34.47 standing charge with Ecotricity. I received a quote from Octopus earlier this week for 27.84 and 49.38. Based on these figures I would save approx £1k moving to Octopus. However, we know that prices are rocketing. I have no sense of whether Ecotricity's prices will increase at the same rate as the other supplies who are governed by the price cap. It has been accepted that Ecotricity's prices have always been a bit higher - but based on today's announcement - and likely future increases - could there be a situation where Ecotricity's prices are competitive?

Octopus's variable rates are likely to increase in October to over 50p/kWh.
Ecotricity aren't tied to the same timings as al the other suppliers, and (oddly) one of the other Eco suppliers GEUK had a market-leading fixed rate offer a few weeks ago (now sadly gone).
Do Ecotricity have any fixes on offer?
Also, 1200kWh/yr of electricity is rather a lot. Do you know where it all goes? Do you have electric heating?

As you know yourself Ecotricity is not cap regulated. They claim that they are trying to hedge as much as possible, so in theory they could stay cheaper than cap.

One of the other green suppliers Green Energy UK was famous here in June/July for an open market fix at reasonable rates.
  • Thanks for the replies. We charge our electric car at home hence the high usage. Would welcome other views please. Thanks.
