"Price per unit cap"? Or would the media think that's too many words for the average punter to comprehend?
Considering the average punter doesn't know what a 'unit' is, yes.
What they want to know - how much will it cost to have the lights on all night?
How much does it cost to make a cup of tea?
How much does it cost to have the TV on?
    etc.

  • "Price per unit cap and price per day standing charge cap" of course with two of each (G+E)

This morning when I checked the media, all I could find was 80% increase in or £3,500 for typical household. Neither mean any thing to me as I'm not a typical household and I'm fixed on electricity and on a SVR for gas. What I wanted to know was, what the SVR rate per kwh and SC was being capped at, as it is pretty likely that is close to what i'm going to be charged and then I can adjust my budget.

That being said; it is pretty impossible to budget as the forecast for January's cost increases were 20+% now it's 50%. so I might as well just bury my head in the sand like most people, because no matter how much we try to prepare we are all likely to be in for a shock when the next cap is announced just in time for the coldest months.
  • There's not one single "SVR rate per kWh and SC", there's a table full of them.  You can't really publicise a table in a headline.

What they need is a smart meter In-Home Display.

Clearly I don't understand then, as I thought that for a domestic user there was a cap on the highest price a supplier can charge for an kwh and sc outside of fixed contracts. If I've got that wrong, would you be kind enough to explain, in the simplest terms possible. Thanks.

The cap for KWh and standing charges is different between the energy regions.

What is been published 52p/15p is the national average, and you pay a different rate depending if you are in London, Wales or Scotland.

How do you find out what it is for your area?

The caps are set by region, by payment method and by metering type for both electricity and gas.
In the case of Economy 7 the cap on kWh charges assumes a blended use of 58%/42% (day/night) so the suppliers can deliver a compliant tariff that has a range of different rates.
So there are a number of tables covering these combinations and no simple answer that would not be wrong for the majority of people seeing it...
