I understand that buying ex-motabilty cars is now limited to dealers
But what about the driver of the car - ie) Can you purchase your own (previous) motability car, after 3 years of use ?
This could be important in the choice of the car
ps I am entitled to one and am considering all options (such as Hybrid / Fully electric
Would a PCP deal be more suited to you.
  • We wrote an article about the pro and cons of buying a second-hand Motability car which may be helpful. It includes a section on buying your own Motability car. As far as I'm aware the info is all up to date.

I assume that if they wanted to finance another new car, they'd go for another Motability lease since the pricing is pretty much impossible to beat privately.

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

During my time as a service manager ( I retired in 2002) I dealt with Motability cars on a daily basis. All service work and repairs were carried out strictly to time. Anything that could be claimed under warranty or as goodwill was done so. The vehicles were examined on a regular basis by motability and the customer was charged for scrapes and such - that did cause upset at times. They started a system of doing the MOT as much as 3 months before the expiry of warranty and so ensuring that warranty/goodwill could be claimed. It did seem that they wanted the cars back in as near showroom condition as possible. At that time Motability which was owned by the banks was worth £19 billion a year - there was even a parliamentry

There were in fact two classes of Motability = One owned by them whilst the other was under the scheme but at the end of term became dealer property (don't ask me to explain it) The dealerships were able to buy them at the time and they fetched top price having been overserviced and super low mileage - I have seen them winvestigation about it/ith less than 2,000 miles after 3 years. Any additions made by the driver had to be removed and the vehicla made good.

The funniest was the Ford Escort 1300 - Grandma got the car on Motability and grandson used to drive her to the supermarket every week - the rest of the time he enjoyed it.
When only a few months old it came in for a recall - Technician drew our attention to it as it had lowered suspension - modified exhaust and a full body kit and full sound system. Of course we had to inform Motability about this. They inspected and told Grandma that the modifications were not authosied or acceptable and it had to be returned to spec. Grandson was not very happy - having modified the car he had sold all the parts removed to help finance it. It cost him a lot of money and rather spoilt his street cred.

  • What about Kias / Hyundai warrantys
    They, presumably transfer?

If you used your award to fund a PCP, £280 pm will get you a decent car then when deal is due for renewal use your award to fund a loan to pay off the GFV that way car is yours if that is what you wish.

I can get  a car worth about £24,000 which does not cover the "automatic" car that I need with addons such as special swivel seat and rear winch for wheelchair
