Who to go with for gas and electricity
We have just bought a house that has gas and electricity. We are aware that there are no good deals no and things are set to get worse (we have a stove so we hope to use this for a lot of our heating). My question is how do we choose who to go with? we are definitely not going with SSE as there are so many horror stories about them, but everyone you speak to is with a different company and I am just lost! My sister is with OVO, I used to be with EON but have never had gas before and my other half was with SSE and had numerous problems with them.

Who is the incumbent supplier to your property? You are automatically a customer of theirs, so as soon as you move in you must supply them with energy readings - you will probably have to do it by phone if you want to go on the SVT.
Only once this is done can you switch away, but you will have a hard time finding another supplier to take you on unless you sign up for an undoubtedly very expensive fixed tariff.1 -
You are more than likely stuck for now with the existing supplier of the property.
I am stuck with British Gas who are the last company I wanted, they were terrible when a relative died, won't offer me a variable DD and nothing I've experienced with them yet has changed my mind about what an awful company they are.1 -
Octopus are one of the few *possibly* taking new customers, if you want a tariff other than the SVT (e.g. Tracker or Agile) and are persistent - but you'd have to investigate the tariffs first and there's no guarantee they are taking anyone.0
