Duped by Expedia

I would like to draw attention of Expedia’s Price Match Promise which I mistakenly thought applied to hotel bookings, and which is not clear on their website.  I booked two rooms for several days for a family trip in the UK.  I later discovered the rooms on the hotel’s own website were several hundred pounds cheaper for the time we were staying.  I checked what I thought were the rules on the Expedia website and my booking met all their criteria.

When I applied for a price match refund however, I discovered that the Price Match deal is on the expedia.com website but it doesn’t apply to the UK site.  When you go onto the expedia.com website it immediately takes you to the UK site – Welcome to Expedia.com. Continue to the United Kingdom site at expedia.co.uk" where the deal, I’m informed, doesn’t apply.  Expedia therefore are refusing to price match and have given me a 50GBP ‘good will’ gesture. This strikes me as being very unethical practice and in no way compensates for the difference in price.  Don’t get caught by this!

I don't see anything on the home page of Expedia.com referring to a price promise, but there is a link at the top to go to the UK site.  Where is the price promise?

OP is this what you are referring to? https://www.expedia.co.uk/price-guarantee-claim
are you already an Expedia Rewards Member?
disclaimer - link found by googling 'expedia hotel price guarantee' and them amending the .com to .co.uk....maybe it is an old page
  • Yes, I'm a silver member and that's the guarantee!  If it's an old page it should surely have been taken down.

So what reason exactly did Expedia give for rejecting your claim ?

If the main website now doesn't have a link to it then it effectively has been taken down - but as far as I know it's almost impossible to completely delete stuff from the internet once it finds it's way into search engines etc as then it;s outside the oroginators control....
  • Thanks, Expedia just say that they no longer price match.  booking.com however do price match, so I'll know who to use next time I'm booking multiple hotel rooms!

Not true. If you delete the page from your website it is gone. A search engine may still return results but will link to a dead page which your site should handle cleanly such as either saying it no longer exists or redirecting to the home page.

Sometimes the internet search site may have a cache engine, but that would only be shown if the website is not set up properly, or would clearly be marked as a cached page.

Don't use either, or at most, check for pricing and book direct. Most mainstream hotels these days will do better direct as they don't need to pay the fees and often offer perks like free breakfast. Further, with a hotel if you need a refund etc you can get that direct from them vs having to try and cancel with Expedia who then have to ask the hotel to approve it

Well surely now you will know you compare the price on multiple comparison sites and the hotels own website before booking.

If you just go from using one website to just using only another one then you have learned nothing from this...
