@adrian5517 In reality you are actually stuck with SSE as it's almost impossible to switch (EDF is a possibility)

The big rises to tariffs heading our way will soon swallow up that credit.

Once your switch is underway, any credit balance will make its way back to you, but it won't happen immediately.

Switching suppliers at the moment isn’t easy unless you agree to an expensive fixed tariff. The new supplier will also want your first month’s payment in advance of supply, and you might have to wait until 6 weeks after the transfer to get any credit balance back. 

Your credit balance is only valid for one day: the day that the balance appeared on your account, and only then if it was based on an actual meter reading.

If you think that your credit balance is too high based on your usage and on future energy costs, then ask SSE to reduce your monthly DD payment.
