Direct debits

I’m in credit - bill and review in November - my app says ‘you should be paying £xxx’. Surely they just can’t put my direct debit up until the review ?

Is your direct debit covering your usage?

Who is your supplier? EDF and BG only bill every six months and so the credit goes up for 6 months without any usage. Only when the bill is generated you will see if there is really a credit.

You saying bill and review are due in November seems to hint you are with one of those suppliers.

Otherwise there were also some news a few weeks ago that Ofgem allows increases of direct debits already now in preparation of the new cap.

Short answer is "yes they can", long answer, as per the above post is "it depends".

As an example I am currently £720 in credit with EDF because of the above mentioned billing cycle, by the time they issue a bill and balance everything off in October (my next billing and review month) I will end up with around £500 credit left over, however the October increased rates will kick in, so things get complicated. They will be trying to keep things under ongoing review as whilst I don't mind if I end up with £500 credit next spring and if I ended up £500 in debt I could pay it, they are very aware of the risk of bad debts and difficulty obtaining payment should people not adequately prepare for the cost increases.
