Getting popups yet I'm using a popup blocker!

The desktop has just had AVG free edition installed on it and it is still getting popups.

I have also used AVG anti spyware.

In addition it is running slow to stop, and locking up.

What should I be doing?

Not a lot you can do. Popup blockers can only stop certain types.

AVG free is anti-virus not anti pop-up!

Perhaps some general housekeeping by using ccleaner tutorial here and try a better browser like Firefox which has a pop-up blocker.

Is it possible that you are getting Windows Messenger spam? This has nothing to do with your browser - it's a separate vulnerability in Windoze.

I've loaded and run ccleaner, I have also looked at the windows messanger and followed the link instructions.

There are two basic problems here.

1) the computer is really slow on startup, taking several minutes to do one instruction.

2) Pop ups occurr advertising 888.com etc, despite having the popup blocker in place.

Suggest you do some further scans, you are infected. Do they say CID at the top of the popup?

ditch ie and go to firefox and use the noscript plugin - if you still get popups after this, then it is something on your system

My main concern is that the system is slow to start up. If I can sort this out then I will be happy (ier)
