Home insulation for someone NOT on benefits help

Hi all,

Like everyone else the upcoming price rises are causing me stress.

We have a 60's built bungalow with no cavity wall insulation and it is cod in the winter, last years gas usage was 22000 KWH to heat the place. I know i should have done this before now but i am looking at cavity wall insulation and underfloor.

There seems to be tons of grants and companies doing this but only if your on some kind of benefit which we are not, At the same time were not exactly rolling in it hence the stress.

Even if paying for it im struggling to identify any compnay that will do it, Im in Southern Scotlland.

Can anybody reccomend any company or grant scheme or anything to help get this done as ive looked everywhere and keep getting zero replies when i fill in forms.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HES is basically your starting point.
You can get a £1000 payment (£600 interest free loan plus £400 cashback) for cavity & floor insulation
    https://www.homeenergyscotland.org/find-funding-grants-and-loans/interest-free-loans/overview/

However, often these schemes have requirements like an EPC before & an EPC after & the work done by an accredited installer so that it may not actually work out cheaper for you depending upon individual circumstance ...
  • I’d be mindful of wind driven rain with installing CWI- something to ask any potential installers about. Driving rain will find weak points in the external wall will make any mineral wool soggy and it’ll slump. The cavity is then bridged and you’ll get damp inside the house. The glued EPS beads are more expensive than mineral wool but they won’t hold onto moisture- still not ideal though. Ask around friends and neighbours and see if they have any good/bad CWI experiences and go from there. I’m in the NW of England and there are 5 CWI extraction companies for every installer it feels like.

  • Thanks Buff,

that’s a decent start,I just hoped there would be grant somewhere, but I just don’t seem to tick any of those boxes.

As for damp, no issues I’ve need made aware of by neighbours regarding mould

Had cavity wall insulation installed (badly) here several years ago. It has made next to zero difference...
Fitting new windows and killing all the cold draughts has made an instant difference. Installed wall insulation internally in one bedroom, and it is now much easier to heat & keep warm. Other rooms will get the same treatment as & when time/enthusiasm allows. To keep costs down, I'm doing much of the work myself.
