Working holiday - package or not?

Hi,
I am planning on an extended working holiday in Australia soon and am unsure whether it would be best to book a flight independent of any accommodation or to book a short hotel stay in order to qualify as a package and therefore, obtain ATOL protection. I will not require more than 3 to 4 days in a hotel once I arrive in Australia as I will be staying in accommodation arranged elsewhere.
I'm also interested in the best travel insurance policy for overseas travel beyond the usual 30 days cover.
Any thoughts welcomed on booking a package or not and travel insurance.

Who would book a package for an extended stay?

Best to just get decent backpackers insurance. Read the small print to ensure it meets your needs before buying

Make sure any insurance covers working holidays.

Maybe somebody can offer clarity - I suspect a package holiday deal would ony be recognised as such if the departure and return dates match up with the dates of the accommodation ?

No, there is no such stipulation - the definition of 'package' for the purposes of the protection afforded under the Package Travel Regulations is given at paragraph 5 in https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2018/634/regulation/2/made
