Do I need to return eBay item or not?

Bought item, was a tool but didn't fit the job when other tools that were that size did fit (just weren't suitable - longer unimportant story) so don't know if it was just stamped up as the wrong size or what.
Went through the "return item" process but immediately after hitting confirm:
Suggests I don't need to return it.
Makes no odds to me as it's no good for what I need.
Just looking for confirmation.

People are having issues with ebay at the moment. Keep the item safe as they may want it back but having issues
with the system trying to send a returns label.
Keep it safe for a month or two or message them asking if they want it back.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I've actually since had an email saying a refund has been issued. I'll still keep hold of it as it's a tool and you just never know when I guess.
Maybe they couldn't be bothered for the price. Each to their own. I can be bothered though. I don't have £5.30 to just keep throwing away on things that aren't fit for the job and for the sake of a walk to the PO I would happily return it if that's what they wanted.0 -
I've recently had refunds for items that were not as described.
Both items of footwear said they were leather but the labels said otherwise.
I would have been happy to return them (at seller's cost) but both sellers said to dispose of as I wanted.
Both went to a charity shop.0 -

I don't know ANY company that will refund before receiving the item back.
If you've been refunded, the item is yours for free.
Unless the seller says they don't want the item back (as in my sellers above), you are obliged to return the item with the seller paying the cost of return. If an item has gone missing and hasn't arrived, you'll either need to provide additional/more detailed tracking details, or offer a refund. If the buyer got their item but it's faulty, damaged, or doesn't match the listing description, you'll have to work with them to resolve their issue – you'll also have to cover the return postage costs. If they changed their mind, how you can respond, and who pays for return postage, will depend on your return policy.https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/manage-returns-missing-items-refunds-sellers?id=4079&st=12&pos=1&query=Manage returns, missing items, and refunds for sellers&intent=refund&docId=HELP1111
The OP said it was a eBay purchase.
If I sold a 18 carat gold necklace and said it was year 1932 but it was actually 1952, it would not be as described.
I would refund the buyer and pay for return postage (as per eBay rules) but I would certainly want the gold necklace back.
The item would not be the buyer's for free.2 -

It was the seller's choice to refund, but sometimes the seller still thinks you will return it. I would contact the seller and ask. Perhaps they want to pay return postage which they are meant to if it was faulty or misdescribed.I had a similar situation although ebay refunded me because the seller had not provided a return label. The rules might have changed recently.2

Most of what you have written is not relevent to the OPs example.
If you sold a necklace for £10 (on pure luck), that you know is worth £2 but it costs £5 to post, it wouldn't be worth you getting the seller to send it back as it would cost you more than the item is worth.
As is the case here.
I've had it quite a few times - the item I bought was so cheap, it isn't worth the sellers paying for a return cost. Books are a good example.
It really doesn't matter what the rules are - if ebay refunds, that's 99% of the time the end of it.
No doubt the seller will be on asking you to return it if they're not happy with you keeping the item and it certainly shouldn't be worth your time chasing it with them - it's their responsiblity to chase you.2 -
Ok just so this thread can die a death - the seller doesn't want the item back. Not worth it to them.
Thank you.0 -
Of course it matters what eBay rules are.
As I said, the OP needed to check with the seller re return.
Which he has done.
End of story.1 -
