Moving home school changes

Schools are opening next week and we have still not reached completion on the property we are buying.
I just wanted to ask what happened with everyone in regards to changing school? If our completion is delayed for another 2 weeks then how difficult is it to move schools? Worse case scenario I was thinking my daughter can continue at her current school & then once completion happens, we can apply for a school near the new property. Has anyone had a period of time when their kids were not going school as they didn't get a school place straight away? Thanks

Are you moving a long way away?I've done it - we liaised with the Schools and they were pretty cool about it. Finished one Friday, started the different School on the following Monday.1

I work in admissions at a primary school, there's no issue with your daughter continuing at her current school and then moving once a place at her new school is offered. This would be classed as an 'In Year' admission, I would check your preferred schools website for their admissions policy, some academies look after their own admissions and you apply to them directly whereas if the school is under local authority control you'd need to apply to the local authority (LA). Also it's worth checking the schools you wish to apply for have places available, again an academy school will be able to tell you however LA schools may direct you to the LA as they do not know what applications are being processed.
Ideally I'd apply as soon as possible to the new school and once offered a place you can let the school know your moving date.1 -

I did contact both the schools near the new place but I'm not allowed to apply until we have the contract. Both schools are full and said once school re-opens they will know whether they have any space left.
I can't even buy my daughter's uniform as I'm not sure which school she will be going to.
Solicitor is unreachable & is currently just checking if the gifted deposit is ok with the bank. Once the bank approves this then we can reach completion.0 -
Thanks for that information. The two schools I want to apply to both require going through the council. I have checked directly with them and both are full (unless once school opens anyone in the year has moved away).GedlingRed said:I work in admissions at a primary school, there's no issue with your daughter continuing at her current school and then moving once a place at her new school is offered. If both are full, the you might need to put her in a further away school until the next year or until a space opens up. Hopefully though when school starts there are places and you are closest to get in.Rumana03 said:

This doesn't sound great!Rumana03 said:Thanks for that information. The two schools I want to apply to both require going through the council. I have checked directly with them and both are full (unless once school opens anyone in the year has moved away).
Have you managed to put your names down on a waiting list for both schools pending exchange of contracts??
Schools cannot take children off the role until another school confirms they have started there, which happens first week in September, then the school will know if they have any free places and work their way through the waiting list.
So ideally you will want to exchange contracts BEFORE the start of term so you can accept a place if one is available.
In the mean time, you will need to look at other schools in the area that DO have places. Many schools are over-subscribed so you will need a back up plan.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
You need a plan B. What will you do if they are no places at both the schools near the new place?Rumana03 said:

One of the schools said that my daughter will have to be given a place but it would be up to the council which school to allocate her. The two schools I would want are 8 minutes and 16 minutes away by walk. There are 2 more schools but one is 21 minutes and one is 28 minutes away. I suppose I can call them to check if they have any places left.silvercar said:

The council do not need to give her a place at the closest school or even the second. They will give her a space at one with space that meets her needs and then you can apply for transport to take her there in most cases if its more than 2-3 miles away.Rumana03 said:

Hopefully though its short lived and a space opens up at your preferred. You might need to buy two sets of uniform though, which sucks.1 -
Absolutely the council will find her a place but it will be at the nearest school with a place. If it is not walking distance you can apply for transport.Rumana03 said:One of the schools said that my daughter will have to be given a place but it would be up to the council which school to allocate her. So it might be worth doing your own research on other schools with places rather than leaving it up to the council.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
