My smart meter stopped working.

Hi.

My smart meter stopped working a few months ago. Generally, I send in meter readings. I've heard on the news this morning that the utility companies may give rebates for folks who use high-energy items at night. Shell energy have been most unhelpful and tell me I just have to accept my meter has stopped working, and that other companies are experiencing the same issues. They assure me they are busily trying to fix it, but are not sure when. Any thoughts on how I can get my meter working again? Cazz

  • What is 'not working ' with the meter?

Are you definitely referring to the meter, or do you mean the in-house display unit?
  • There are numerous reasons why a supplier cannot get data from your meters. One of the main reasons is that the supplier has deployed a meter firmware update and the meter has stopped responding.

This is where it gets complicated. The DCC is responsible for communications hubs and the network. Individual meter and IHD manufacturers design; build and certify their devices with the DCC. Manufacturers also produce meter firmware updates which the suppliers deploy.

It follows that there is not much that a supplier can do. For example, there are reports of firmware issues with WNC communications hubs which only the DCC and WNC can resolve. Last year, some Kaifa electricity meters had issues for 7 months.
