Privet is usually hardy once it is established, could you not get some more plants,or cuttings, to fill out the gaps and with a bit of time and growth it will discourage it being used as a shortcut.
The lawn could be improved, there are lawn maintenance companies who for a small monthly fee will come several times a year and apply whatever feed and chemicals are needed, it does not take long for improvement to be noticed.
If you do go for putting gravel down and any spills out onto pavement it is inevitable that any passing young lads will fling them at each other, it just seems to be a thing that lads of a certain age do. I always think it is better not to put temptation in their way.
