My energy history Kwh's

Year's ago i was tired of my direct debit going up and down every few months, I was either £300 in credit of £600 in debit. Annoyingly I was with the same energy provider and they couldn't seem to estimate my usage correctly, so in 2006 i took it upon myself to get to the bottom of it. In the early days i took reading every 1-3 months, but for the last 7 year's I have taken them once a month where possible and I aim for a reading on the first of the month (thought it may vary to a few days before or after).

This is for the same property..... a 2 bed mid terrace with gas c/h and a gas hob and electric oven. Readings are from September to September each year. So here are the kwh's used, the number's have been rounded up or down to he nearest 100 for ease of reading.

17-18           2,500                    17-18           14,000
18-19           2,500                    18-19           12,000

20-21           1,800                     20-21          9,200
21-22           1,200                     21-22          3,100

Notes on electric usage:
  • Start of 2011 CRT tv packed up (Loewe Planus) and replaced with 46" wide LCD Samsung (still working)
  • 2014 New fridge freezer.
  • Early 2017 New boiler fitted

Notes on Gas Usage:
  • 2013 - Loft inulation installed
  • 2017 - New boiler (made no difference over previous 22 year old biasi).
Other notes:
  • 2006-mid 2018 There was 2 adults in the house and our daughter, post 2018 there is just my daughter and I.
  • 2021-2022 For electric I went on a purge and turned everything off at the wall when not in use, and/or out the house / in bed. This is my current electric low point now, I can't get below this till i replace my old TV with a smaller more efficient one (current one is big) and i get rid of the old sky box (which i use as freeview). The only other way i can reduce electric is a more efficient fridge freezer, considering the fridge is mainly used for yogurt and milkshake i may have to think how else i can store these and just have a freezer when the current one packs in.
  • 2021-2022 For gas i just went super stingy, when it started to get colder in late septemer early october i didnt bother turning on the heating and just layered up. by the time December came round i had aclimatized to the cold more and didnt have the heating on much usually 5-7pm and that was it, the heating hasnt been on since the first week of March and i consitently use 80-100 kwh's of gas a month to shower and wash up with.

So any of you who think "my usage is too high" it can depend on a number of factors, obvoius ones being number of people in the house (especially teenagers), insulation old technology/appliances and leaving stuff on when your out the house or don't need it.

Hope this may be of some interest.

I found this really interesting, thank-you.
I will try to take inspiration to cut our usage further.

Was there any loft insulation before 2014, or was it additional, on top of any existing?

A good advert for loft insulation for anyone that has none/little then.

    1/3 off heating bill!

Really interesting to see, I will make a post like this soon to show a difference between having old freezer and fridge vs not. We shaved off 50-60kW/h a month with this change. I'm also planning to do better draft insulation and thermal curtains for front and back doors. Will be good to see how that changes gas use.
  • I'm down about 70kwh per month, I have been switching everything off at the wall when not in use and having shorter showers. I'm being prepared in advance and defrosting food over night rather than in microwave. But I think the main saver is that I am using a Ninja multi cooker for the last month and hardly use my oven or hob now.
