wife has medical conditions and with forecasted rise in heating bills looking to see if we qualify- we are both over 66

There is already a range of supports in place for the elderly re energy costs: not all of these require you to be in receipt of benefits, it's more dependent on your age and state pension eligibility.
Even without this, you'll get the £400 energy bill discount, and the £150 CT credit (if bands A to D).
Also the WFP, and the pensioner CoL supplement if you are 67.
