Rent deposit schemes?

Options
Hi there,

Does anyone know of any rent deposit schemes or anything alike that are aimed at working class people that aren't that well off financially?

I only ask cos me and my partner are in private rented and had a baby 6 weeks ago but the small space and storage heaters which are next to useless, are making living comfortably impossible.. We thought we'd be able to manage until sometime next year when I go back to work or when we've saved enough but its not coming around quick enough...

The council/housing association won't do anything as in there eyes we have a roof over our heads and are managing....

Any help will be greatly appreciated :xmassign:

what do you mean by rent deposit scheme?

there is something thats know as the tenancy deposit scheme, but that's all about protecting the deposit that private tenants put down.

tell us what you want to achieve and people can give advice......
  • Hiya,
I know what your talking about. These are usually run by your local housing office or you could look into getting a budgeting loan from the jobcentre. For info on your local rent deposit scheme head to your local council housing office who will be able to refer you on.
    Best of luck,
    K.

I think the aim is to have the taxpayer pay their security deposit on a better place.

many councils offer a "rental deposit loan scheme" - sometimes called a "Bond Board" - just phone the council housing department and ask.

Such loans are repayable to the council, at an agreed small rate per week.

There are charities that operate these schemes around the country, although they do tend to focus on people that are or are soon to be made homeless.

the experience I've had with one running in Plymouth was very good. They only guaranteed £150 but when the tenant in question basically got chucked out after paying no rent for 2 months, stole a load of stuff from the flat and cost me money to get the place cleaned up I submitted an account of losses to them totalling some £700.

I got the £150, as that was the absolute maximum that they guaranteed. I couldn't complain, especially as I did get some back rent later straight from the HBO :). I was still out of pocket by much more than the £150 so they stood by their original decision to pay the max without wanting some back.

  • Only some letting agents accept council deposit bond. You should phone all local agents to find out which ones do and log your details with them. If the heating is not good enoght for your present place phone the council and they with come out and check. They can force the landlord to do something about it in certain cases.
    O
  • Not sure whereabouts you are but in Bristol, South Gloucestershire Bond Scheme helps out folk who can't get a deposit together for one reason or another.

As you will expect though, like all these schemes, they're way over-subscribed with people wanting the money so wherever you are, don't expect a quick answer.
