Hi, we are due to renew our house insurance. Our neighbour has just had to pay out thousands for issues with waste drainage pipes in the garden as it wasn't covered by their insurance. Does anyone know of any policies that cover things like this that won't break the bank?
Worried if the same happened to us we wouldn't be able to afford the repairs, so would like the peace of mind that it's covered of needed. Thanks

House insurance is usually against accident etc, but not a maintenance policy.

Sorry I may have worded my question poorly. Its not drain maintenance we are looking for but an insurance policy that would cover drain issues if they arise. Our neighbours pipes had cracked and they had a build up of stagnant water in the pipes so the waste water was not draining awayAlter_ego said:House insurance is usually against accident etc, but not a maintenance policy.0

Hi, I just googled "does buildings insurance cover drains" and the answer is yes. So you could have a google and see which insurance company sounds the best for you. It's better to pay more for full insurance cover than to have to pay out thousands because you aren't properly covered, in my opinion anyway.
I think you'd be very wise to take out full buildings insurance as soon as possible. I do feel sorry for your poor neighbours but when I was a home owner we had both contents and buildings insurance because it's mad to pour money into a house without having all the protection you can get. I wouldn't waste any time, either, in your position because your pipes could be next to go. Insurance is a very good thing. I'd never be without it - travel, contents, car, you name it. It's always worth it.

Home insurance is written on a defined peril basis, it therefore covers damage to your property when you can demonstrate that its been caused by fire, flood, earthquake, accidental damage etc. Insurance isnt a maintenance contract so doesn't cover wear and tear, poor workmanship or faulty design.Jeccadoodle said:

Drains will be covered if you can demonstrate the cause of the problem is an insured peril. How did your neighbour's pipe get cracked?0
