Energy Monitor - Openenergymonitor Iotawatt vs Votaware?
Anyone any experience of energy monitors?
I'm in the process of having solar plus battery fitted and would like to have a more granular view of our usage.
I have looked at Openenergymonitor, Iotawatt and now Voltaware has come to my notice.
Are any of them any good?
Voltaware is heavily discounted via Octopus who I am with at the moment but the others are open source.
Any and all views/opinions etc. greatly appreciated.

Check out Emporia Evo available from Amazon and eBay. I believe it can support solar as well as general usage. It allows you to monitor individual circuits as well.1

Hi @crey
Found you post last year via a search for "voltaware".....
Just interested in what solution you settled for in the end gaining more granular energy monitoring?
I'm also considering Voltaware and like what I've seen would be available with it installed via the Octopus R&D labs website.1 -
Same here. Equally, I take it this isn't great for those with solar and batteries?cm4ever said:crey said:Anyone any experience of energy monitors?I'm in the process of having solar plus battery fitted and would like to have a more granular view of our usage.I have looked at Openenergymonitor, Iotawatt and now Voltaware has come to my notice. Are any of them any good?Voltaware is heavily discounted via Octopus who I am with at the moment but the others are open source.Any and all views/opinions etc. greatly appreciated.

If it is sitting on the DIN rail in your consumer box then I would assume that it is agnostic when it comes to Grid; solar or battery. FWiW, I guess that 30 minute usage data is enough for most people. I can make a calculated guess as to how much energy our washing machine uses for a full wash by looking at the 30 minute data.waqasahmed said:

From what I found out, it's not fully compatible with solar or battery storage etc as you'll see from the disclaimer on the linked webpage below.waqasahmed said:Same here. Equally, I take it this isn't great for those with solar and batteries?
I did also email the Voltaware company directly, but they never replied...

(The price has also gone up by 50% from £99 to £149 after applying the Octopus available discount)0 -
Just out of interest, I'm currently testing the HUGO Pro beta web app, it's still a bit rough around the edges and definitely a 'work in progress', but shows good promise - still early days though.
Eventually once it's fully working and all functionality has been implemented, it'll offer all the current standard HUGO functionality with integrated solar inverter & battery storage support, as well as full support for Octopus Flux....0 -
Yup. I did notice that. Sadly prices for consumer electronics have gone up drasticallycm4ever said:

Though the Emporia evo does seem like a better shout, especially if you've got solar + batteries0 -
I have a couple of the Peacefair modules monitoring my electricity. A PZEM-016 (100A) for total house consumption, and a PZEM-014 (10A) on the lighting circuit. Both linked to a home automation system that provides a web display along with data storage. Energy readings are updated every 30 seconds, although I could go to 10 seconds.. 30 seconds is enough to capture the shorter spikes in usage without overloading the data storage.Dolor said: FWiW, I guess that 30 minute usage data is enough for most people. Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Are there any updates on this technology as we are about to get Solar + Battery & would love to be able to see where all our power is being used?0
