So, most of us will get £66 per month back in our bank account. Surely any sensible person will just send it straight back to energy account as a manual credit.
Why would I do that? I'm told how much I've used each month and pay exactly that and no more. Are you saying I'm not being sensible? If you wish to do that yourself then that's fine but to basically call anyone who doesn't do that not sensible is offensive and judgmental. I think you should edit your post to remove that remark.

Most peoples DD will not include the massive increase to the price cap in October. Unless they recalculate DDs to include estimated usage on the new price cap,  which they have said they want to avoid,  most people will be paying a DD for usage in October,  November based on the current price cap.  By paying for usage with a DD based on the current price cap most people will be deferring paying the difference to the new price cap until after their account review.  The DD amount after the review not only has to cover next year's estimated cost,  but also recoup the difference for usage between the current and new price caps.  If the EBSS was credited to the energy account instead of being returned to the customer,  it would go towards paying some of that difference and helping to set a lower DD people pay after the DD review.  Far from helping people,  the chosen method of operating this support is going put extra money in households pockets now in exchange for much higher DDs next year than what they could have been

What you are describing is we need to think for those who are not interested what is happening. Probably those would be the first to ask for their money back.

It also does not matter, at least BG and likely the others,  have their process in place.

I wont be doing that just to pander to people who take remarks out of context - toughen up....
  • "£400 govn money"
Just a slight pedantic correction - taxpayers' money.
  • The Government wording on this is confusing. The gov.uk website says "households will see a discount of £66 applied to their energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 each month from December through to March 2023".

But, that's not what's happening. At least with British Gas, the energy company is distributing the money to our bank accounts, which means it can be spent on school shoes or food or rent.

Then further down the same page it says it can be sent as a refund to the customer's bank account, which isn't the same thing as a discount to your energy bill at all.

The net effect is, because a discount on your bill means you pay less than before the discount, thereby freeing up that amount of funds for other things such as school shoes, food, rent.

Bills are still going to go up, with the price increases, it just means you need to pay slightly less of them for the 6 months.
