Side Hustles

So I have seen posts, mainly on Instragram, recommending people to have a side hustle to bring in extra income.  What side hustles can everyone recommend please - or what has or hasn't worked for you ?  Thank you - any suggestions welcome as need to bring in some extra income.

How much do you want to make, how much time or effort can you put in.

  • What’s the difference between making money from a hobby and a side hustle? Or is just a fancy new name?

No difference, I don't think. Although maybe a "side hustle" isn't necessarily something you have much of an interest in, just something you do on the side for money. Focussing on monetising a hobby can lead to not enjoying that hobby any more.

OP question is difficult to answer without knowing what their skills are, how much time and space they have available, any money to invest in equipment or stock? For example you could offer to help with people's HMRC self-assessment, but not if you're no good with numbers. You could deliver flyers for local businesses, but if you have mobility issues or no transport, that might be a poor choice.
    • Babysitting
    • Pet sitting e,g- 'Cat in a flat'
    • Bank/casual work in pretty much any industry, carer, waitressing etc.
    • Online reselling of books, clothes, shoes, jewellery etc
    • Car boot sales to get rid of stuff and bring in some cash.
    • Tutoring online
    • Exam marking
    • Casual Car parking/ events work
    • Selling unwanted items on Facebook marketplace
    • Online Surveys
    • Market research
    • TV Extra
    • Hosting exchange students
    • Renting out your driveway if you have one, some people also rent out attic space etc.
These are some of the things I can think of off the top of my head! I'm sure others will have suggestions. If you have work experience in a particular field you may be able to do other things related to that field.

I wouldn't suggest MLM things as I've done that for a couple of companies and lost money. I would get a big bit of paper and a pen and mind map everything you can think of and also google some ideas as well. As others have said time and experience may determine what you can do but there's lots of ideas floating around the internet.

I can recommend hard work, time and effort.

And don't forget to pay your income tax and national insurance when and if your earnings go over the personal threshold. Because you would declare all extra income, I assume.  :)

The point at which you need to declare is heavily dependent on what type of work it is. Most of the time, you can earn up to £1000 without having to tell HMRC. There's a page to check here: https://www.gov.uk/check-additional-income-tax

    Mortgage start date: 01/10/2021
    Original mortgage debt:

    Daily interest: £2.88
Mortgage debt end of 2023: £101,528 | Mortgage debt end of 2024: £88,876

I am a book addict, I've managed to make a bit of money (£220 after expenses over 3 months), selling rare or unusual books. Its not big bucks but it was money i was able to pay off my credit card for a month. I do shop in charity shops and have the time to check, usually then and there before i purchase, whether a book is worth anything.

The flip side - in a bipolar moment I bought 50,000 worms online to breed for composting. So far I have two massive plastice buckets full of worms that I haven't even tried to sell
  • I became an Independent Travel agent for a side hustle. I did this for a year alongside my job in the 3rd sector as a volunteer manager. I absolutely love it!

I've got a (what I think is a somewhat rare and unusual, if 'popular' modern) book that I picked up in a charity shop for £1. It's brand new, mint condition, still in shrink wrap and has a £30 sticker on the back of it under the packaging from the original shop. I believe it's signed inside though I haven't opened it to check. Any ideas where I could sell it?
