Air bubble in central heating?

Hi
I hope you can help me by diagnosing the problem I am having.
When the central heating is on, every so often, the pump stops, and then I can hear a whooshing sound through my boiler followed by a number of cracks and loud bangs. The pump then restarts within a minute of this finishing.
Am I right in saying there is air in the system? Is this a problem I should be worried about with the really cold months about to start and the fact that I am going on holiday for two weeks starting next weekend?
If so what to do about it?
In a previous house, air used to get trapped in the radiators, which meant they got cold. This was easy to diagnose and correct with the use of a radiator key.
Any thought on if this is a problem and if so how I go about getting it fixed. I rent the property by the way, so if it was a serioud problem, I would ask my landlord to fix it?
Many thanks in advance

Hi
Pump should run continuously, as long as the boiler is firing. If it's cutting out whilst firing it will (and is in your case ) literally boil the water. It needs looking at.

Thanks Canucklehead
It has been going on for a while. I mentioned it to the Corgi guy when he came and did the inspection last January. However as it didn't happen when he was there, he couldn't diagnose it. However I may not have given him as much information as I gave in the above post.
I will mention it to my landlord.0 -
That sounds very similar to a problem a frien had with his central heating. It rquired bleeding/fluching. I believe there was something on the back of the boiler that did it. It may be worthwhile getting someone to have a go at that!0
