Late payments to British Gas and markers on Credit reports

Just recently had a marker but on my credit file due to a late payment with BG. As with most people we had a £1,000 bill which we disputed. Its now paid, but I think its unfair to mark your credit report when the bills have been paid? Due to the current rise in Energy bills there must be millions of people who have paid their bills late?

Had BG made an error or was your bill found to be correct?
If there was an error then you should ask BG to remove the late payment marker as you were justified in refusing payment.
If there was no error, then you failed to pay the bill on time and the marker is correct.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Highly unlikely. Possibly a few more but certainly not millions.
But if you're going to pay late, you're going to get a late payment marker0 -
Most people are on a direct debit. They just pay a monthly amount upfront and when they dispute a bill they will have already made payments.
Did you withhold the whole £1000 or just the disputed amount?0 -
Late payments and defaults are never removed once the debt is paid, they are just marked as satisfied. They will remain for 6 years. It's a matter of historical record.
One late payment marker does not trash your credit record. No free lunch, and no free laptop
